Solid surfaces, interfaces and thin films. 4th, rev. and ext. ed. (English) Zbl 0985.74002

Advanced Texts in Physics. Berlin: Springer. xiii, 559 p. (2001).
The chapters of this book are devoted to phenomena on solid surfaces, thin films and interfaces. The book starts from introduction to ultrahigh vacuum technology, to basic elements of particle optics (chapter 1), and to the preparation of well-defined surfaces (chapter 2). Morphology and structure of surfaces and thin films are discussed in chapter 3, whereas general aspects of scattering on surfaces and thin films are analyzed in chapter 4, where the author describes in detail the kinetic theory of surface scattering, inelastic and dielectric scattering on thin surface layers, Rutherford back-scattering, and so on. The physics of surface phonons and plasmons is presented in chapters 5. Chapter 6 examines electronic surface states; here the reader can find a brief discussion of three-dimensional crystals, photoemission, and surface structure of metals and semiconductors. Phenomena in space (charged layers on semiconductor interfaces) are described in chapter 7.
The longest chapter of the book (chapter 8) is devoted to electronic properties of semiconductor heterostructures and metal-semiconductor junctions. The chapter begins with a survey of general principles governing the electronic structures of solid-solid interface; vibrational properties of solid interfaces are treated using the theory of surface phonons and plasmons. Descriptions of collective phenomena on interfaces, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, are collected in chapter 9, where the general formalism of superconductivity theory is presented according to engineering applications. Finally, chapter 10 describes physiosorption, chemisorption, and absorption kinetics. These phenomena take place on the solid-gas interfaces, and are very important for technical applications.
On balance, the book may be useful to microelectronics and material engineers, to students, and to scientists that are working in the fields of material processes on interfaces.
