[For a review of the first edition (1980) see this Zbl 0409.65002.]
This book is an excellent course of numerical methods for ordinary and partial differential equations. It contains the basic concepts and results in the subject, many applications are also given. Almost all methods and results about the numerical treatment of ordinary and partial differential equations are given.
The study of stiff, highly oscillatory and convection-diffusion problems is included. The book may be used by advanced students of applied mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering. The contents of the book is the following: Ch. 1: Elements of ordinary differential initial value problems approximation, Ch. 2: Singlestep methods, Ch. 3: Multistep methods, Ch. 4: Difference methods for boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations, Ch. 5: Difference methods for parabolic partial differential equations, Ch. 6: Difference methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations, Ch. 7: Difference methods for elliptic partial differential equations, Ch. 8: Finite element methods, bibliography, answers and hints to the problems and index.
