Summary: During the last decades, important theoretical results have been obtained on multi-criteria decision making but few successful applications to rank alternative tenders for engineering projects have been reported. In this paper, an approach based on the study of the space defined by the relative weights assigned to the relevant criteria (TRIDENT) is proposed and its application to help the municipality of Lisbon to rank alternative tenders for a large engineering project (total cost of about 70 million U.S. Dol.) is described. The required software has been developed in Pascal using micro computers (Apple II and SAGE).
