State models and the Jones polynomial. (English) Zbl 0622.57004

Using a method of ”state models” for calculating the Jones polynomial of a link, the author proves the topological invariance of the number of crossings in a simple alternating projection of an alternating knot. Among other things he also gives necessary conditions for an oriented alternating link to be ambient isotopic to its mirror image.
