Mardia, K. V.; Dryden, I. L. The statistical analysis of shape data. (English) Zbl 0666.62056 Biometrika 76, No. 2, 271-281 (1989). The paper deals with the statistical shape analysis of landmark data. F. L. Bookstein [Stat. Sci. 1, 181-242 (1986; Zbl 0614.62144)] introduced a plausible model and obtained a useful normal approximation for three landmarks. We use exact distribution theory and a normal approximation to consider maximum likelihood estimation. The Fisher information matrix for the normal approximation is given and we consider the hypothesis of shape change. Using these results, we analyse a practical example based on digitized shapes. This example motivated the work and the general direction for future work is indicated.
