Wolfram, Stephen Mathematica: A system for doing mathematics by computer. (English) Zbl 0671.65002 Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Inc. xviii, 749 p. $ 51.25/hbk; $ 34.75/pbk (1988). It is the book on Mathematica, written by the main architect of the system. The book starts with an introduction to Mathematica, then leads the reader through the whole range of Mathematica’s capabilities, ending with a reference guide to the system. Mathematica is both a calculational tool and a programming language. Capable of numerical, symbolic and graphical computation. Mathematica can be used as an interactive problem-solving system. It also incorporates a programming language, in which models can quickly be constructed, and application packages created. Some versions of Mathematica also support “interactive textbooks” in which text and graphics are combined with Mathematica input. Mathematica is included as standard software on all NeXT computers. Versions are also available from such hardware manufacturers as Ardent, IBM, MIPS, Silicon Graphics, Sony, Stellar and Sun.
