On the eigenvalues basic to diffusion through composite media. (English) Zbl 0673.65047

By a combination of the ideas by R. M. Cotta et al. [Thermally developing concurrent-flow circular double-pipe heat exchanger analysis, 8th Int. Heat Transfer. Conf., Vol. 6, San Francisco (1986)] and the sign-count method by M. D. Mikhailov and N. L. Vulchanov [J. Comput. Phys. 50, 323-336 (1983; Zbl 0516.65072)] an automatic procedure is proposed for the solution of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems in composite media with discontinuities at the interfaces. The original multi-region problem with variable coefficients is replaced by another multi-region problem with a larger number of regions but with constant coefficients. For illustration heat conduction through a three-region slab and forced convection in a two-phase flow is treated and the corresponding eigenvalues are tabulated.
