Summary: We show how the systems of mathematical programs obtained for the oligopolistic and the descriptive destination choice behaviours can be considerably simplified. This simplification is accomplished in both cases by formulating the associated variational inequalities. Our results point out the existing analogy between traffic assignment and trip distribution, as well as the possibility of deriving traffic assignment models from game-theoretical principles.
