This is the second, revised edition of a book that was earlier reviewed in detail in this journal (1964; Zbl 0125.42002). The new version appearing after almost thirty years takes partly into account the development of the plate theory, which has been gained in the meantime. So, the author included thermal stress effects, the behaviour of multi- layered composite plates and much new material concerning the plates in the large-deflexion regime. The bibliography is also renewed. Nevertheless, since the objective was to derive rather analytical solutions than solutions based on numerical approach, the second edition does not reflect the recent progress in the computational methods, in particular, in finite and boundary element methods.

The book is especially intended for structural engineers in aeronautical, civil and mechanical engineering and to structural research workers. The following list of chapters may serve as concise table of contents: 1. Derivation of the basic equations; 2. Rectangular plates; 3. Plates of various shapes; 4. Plates whose boundaries are amenable to conformal transformation; 5. Plates with variable rigidity; 6. Approximate methods; 7. General equations and some exact solutions; 8.
