Wagner-Döbler, Roland Perspektiven der Wissenschaftsforschung über die Mathematik. (German) Zbl 0840.01027 Czermak, Johannes (ed.), Philosophy of mathematics. Proceedings of the 15th international Wittgenstein-Symposium, 16-23 August 1992, Kirchberg am Wechsel, Austria. Part I. Wien: Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky. Schriftenreihe der Wittgenstein-Gesellschaft. 20/I, 417-427 (1993). The author pleads for using methods of the science of science for analyzing the emergence and development of mathematical subdisciplines. He especially hints at bibliometrical investigations on the development of output in special mathematical fields which for him have a pronounced internalistic orientation, but nevertheless connect mathematical development to social-empirical aspects. His examples are from an analysis of the \(\Omega\)-Bibliography of Mathematical Logic [Gert H. Müller in collaboration with W. Lenski (eds.), 6 vols. (Springer, Berlin) (1987; Zbl 0632.03002; Zbl 0632.03003; Zbl 0632.03004; Zbl 0632.03005; Zbl 0632.03006; Zbl 0632.03007)] which he undertook together with Jan Berg. A report on their results was published in 1993 [the author and J. Berg, Mathematische Logik von 1847 bis zur Gegenwart. Eine bibliometrische Untersuchung (Berlin, de Gruyter) (1993; Zbl 0815.01007)]. The author stresses that bibliometric methods give quantitative criteria for explaining the process of mathematization of formerly non-mathematical fields of knowledge. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0836.00022].
