Exact observer-based structures for arbitrary compensators. (English) Zbl 0919.93015

The authors consider the computation of observer-based structures for general compensators. The Youla parametrization is used to generalize the technique to arbitrary-order compensators while maintaining the validity of the separation principle. The technique is based on the solution to a generalized nonsymmetric Riccati equation. Necessary conditions are given for the solvability of this equation in terms of observability and controllability properties of the plant. The results are then specialized to \(H_\infty\) or \(\mu\) controllers which arise from an augmented synthesis structure.
