Sundholm, Göran Frege, August Bebel and the return of Alsace-Lorraine: The dating of the distinction between Sinn and Bedeutung. (English) Zbl 1030.01021 Hist. Philos. Log. 22, No. 2, 57-73 (2001). G.Frege’s distinction between “Sinn” and “Bedeutung” is one of the most important landmarks in the development of modern Analytical Philosophy. It is an open problem, however, when exactly Frege arrived at this distinction. In the “Grundlagen der Arithmetik” (1884), Frege’s proposal of a complete reduction of arithmetic to logic, it is not yet present. It was first published in papers of 1892.The author determines upper and lower bound on the date by evidence derived from Frege’s correspondence and notes on revisions of the Begriffsschrift. The distinction must have been taken between December 1889 and May 1890. In a second step the author is able to show that Frege’s example in the published paper, “Bebel fancies that the return of Alsace-Lorraine would appease France’s desire for revenge,” refers to a Reichstag debate on the return of Alsace-Lorraine on June 25, 1890. Given the chronology of Frege’s publications at that time, the author then concludes that the first paper containing the distinction was written in summer and/or autumn 1891.The paper closes with considerations on Frege’s possible sources of “Bestimmungsweise” and “Art des Gegebenseins” relevant for the distinction. The author finds them in earlier work of G.Cantor and B.Riemann. Extracts from the Reichstag debate of June 25, 1890 are given in the appendix.
