Carnap and Neurath in exile: can their disputes be resolved? (English) Zbl 1037.00006

The paper compares the positions of the two most prolific members of the Vienna Circle, R.Carnap and O.Neurath, in respect to three major points of difference: (1) the contrast between Carnap’s rational reconstructionism and Neurath’s naturalism which was significantly different from Quine’s; (2) the differing conceptions concerning the unity of science, viz.Carnap’s hierarchy of reductively related disciplines vs.Neurath’s much looser idea of the connectability of theories of different disciplines for the purpose of prediction; and finally (3) Carnap’s sympathy for A.Tarski’s semantic theory of truth being vehemently opposed by Neurath as metaphysical like other correspondence theories of truth.
The author argues that despite these differences “Neurath’s stand on naturalism and Carnap’s on rational reconstructionism remain compatible in principle” (p.218).
