Historical notes on loop theory. (English) Zbl 1037.01010

This is an account of the history of the theory of loops (i.e, binary operations with the neutral element and unique division) from twenties to sixties. It is well balanced in the sense that no major school is omitted. Most of the text gives just basic information about topics and mathematicians related to one of the mentioned schools; the exception is the work of Ruth Moufang and its connection to the work of Gerrit Bol.
