Kamenetskij, E. S. Flowing over backward-facing steps with a cavity. (Russian) Zbl 1040.86006 Vladikavkaz. Mat. Zh. 3, No. 2, 18-21 (2001). Summary: Using a simple model for a turbulent flow, we numerically show that the size of the flow separation region behind a backward-facing step is increased if there is a cavity behind the step. If the width of the cavity is decreased, the size of the flow separation region is increased until a separate vortex in the cavity.
