Summary: Schiff in 1960 and many others since then have used “space-dragging” Machian explanations for such general-relativistic phenomena as the Lense-Thirring precession of gyroscopes in the space outside massive rotating objects. But an examination of what the dragging patterns could be, shows these explanations to be unsatisfactory.
