The aim of the paper is to convince high-school teachers of the usefulness of theoretical research in various fields of mathematics. The author presents a selection of applications of mathematics in daily life. The examples concern number theory (cryptography), graph theory (electric circuits), group theory (error-correcting codes), theory of functions (tomography), probability theory (numerical solutions of problems in mechanics), theory of differential equations (minimal energy principle), approximation theory (finite elements), matrix theory (numerical analysis), optimization and information theory.
