This is an unchanged fourth edition of the German translation of 1971 of the Russian original from 1969 [Zbl 0213.28801]. The Russian version is only extended by a series of footnotes, and by an appendix to the comment of the tenth problem which explains the solution of this problem given by Yu. V. Matiyasevich [Sov. Math., Dokl. 11, 354-358 (1970); transl. from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 191, 279-282 (1970; Zbl 0212.33401)].
