This is a reprint of a paper which appeared in the Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 25, 197-215. The author gives biographical details of Maxime Bôcher (1867-1918) with particular reference to his period at Harvard. In particular his contribution to the analytical solution of Laplace’s equation and root separation principles for various pairs and triples of polynomials and transcendental functions is related. Specific examples are given together with a full list of Bôcher’s writings.
