Equilibrium of a magnetic drop in a gradient magnetic field. (English. Russian original) Zbl 0664.76144

Magnetohydrodynamics 24, No. 2, 174-178 (1988); translation from Magn. Gidrodin. 1988, No. 2, 46-50 (1988).
We consider the equilibrium of a weightless drop of magnetic liquid (ML) on a solid wall in a nonuniform magnetic field whose gradient is parallel to the wall. When the field and its gradient increase, the drop will deform and move in the direction of the gradient but keeping initially the wetting line L of the solid surface stationary. After reaching the limiting values of the wetting angle (the limiting inflow angle for the forward part and the limiting outflow angle for the flow from the rear part of the wetting line), the drop will begin to move as a whole. We consider the initial phase of the deformation of a drop of ML, and determine the form of the free surface and the nonequilibrium wetting angle.
