On thermal convection in slowly rotating systems. (English) Zbl 1080.76025

Summary: The dynamical properties of convection patterns in a fluid layer heated from below and rotating slowly about a horizontal axis are reviewed. Applications to the equatorial regions of planetary and stellar atmospheres are emphasized. Attention is drawn to the wavelike drift of hexagonal convection cells in the azimuthal direction and to the mean flow generated by all convection patterns except for rolls aligned with the axis of rotation.
