Engineering and scientific computing with Scilab. (English) Zbl 0949.68606

Basel: Birkhäuser. xxv, 491 p. (1999).
This book has as objectives: to give a description of the scientific software package Scilab (including the integrated graphics facilities), to provide a basis for self-instruction and discovery whithin Scilab, by explaining the use of its on-line documentation and to describe the open computing environment that Scilab provides.
The book is structured as follows. Part I presents an overview of Scilab and contains five chapters: Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to Scilab, as high-level programming language. Chapters 2 describes the data types, the syntax of the language and some data-type-related functions. Chapter 3 introduces graphics in Scilab: the media, global plot parameters, high-level 2-D and 3-D capabilities, printing and exporting graphics. Chapter 4 is a tour of some basic functions in linear algebra, polynomial and and rational function, sparse matrices and random numbers.
The second part (six chapters) presents the use of Scilab for various scientific and engineering problems as: signal processing, control, simulation and optimisation. Chapter 9 describes the Scilab Connected Object Simulator, which is an interactive graphical user interface for modeling and simulation of dynamical systems. Chapter 10 describes how to link symbolic with numeric computations by making use of the Maple-to-Scilab interface.
The third and final part of this book presents two ample applications: one concerning the identification of the vibrational modal behaviour of a mechanical structure and the second representing a real industrial application built with Scilab.
This book can be used as an advanced text for graduate students and as a reference work for researchers interested in numerical computation and data analysis with application to several engineering fields. It comes with a CD-ROM containing the complete sourse distribution for many computing platforms and the Scilab code used in the example sesions found in the book.
