Identification and control problems in petroleum and groundwater modeling. (English) Zbl 0842.93053

Lasiecka, Irena (ed.) et al., Control problems in industry. Proceedings from the SIAM symposium on control problems, San Diego, California, USA, July 22-23, 1994. Boston: Birkhäuser. Prog. Syst. Control Theory. 21, 119-149 (1995).
This paper deals with partial differential equation models for multiphase fluid through porous media. A general introduction to the “grand challenge problems” of hydrocarbon recovery and ground water remediation is given. A historical review of parameter identification methods, beginning with “kriging” is presented. Statistical-based methods, output-least squares, modified Gauss-Newton algorithms, gradient-based methods, ending with reduced subspace methods. Specialized techniques for estimating nonlinear parameters are discussed, including Monte-Carlo, Bayesian and fixed point methods.
The reviewer suggests to try global optimization methods such as ALIENOR for solving these identification and control problems.
