In various European countries there is some tradition in organizing workshops, exhibitions, and symposia on the interaction between mathematics and culture. To cite just one prominent example, it suffices to recall Michele Emmer’s well-established annual meetings in Venice called “matematica e cultura” whose Proceedings are regularly published by Springer.
In Germany, however, such events are still quite exceptional. So the University of Würzburg has the merit to have organized an exhibition entitled “Mathematics and concrete arts” which was shown in Würzburg between February 10 and April 29, 2007. Various contributions to this exhibition, which reflect both mathematical aspects of arts and esthetical aspects of mathematics, are collected in this volume which consists of a Preface (H.-G. Weigand) and 13 chapters with the following headings: Mathematics as a metapher – contemplation on some constructive-concrete paintings (M. Lauter); Mathematics – concrete (H.-G. Weigand); Mathematics in fine arts – a pathway to some works of art (D. Guderian); Concrete arts and movement (J. Roth); Modelling and modifying interactively objects of concrete art in virtual space (H. Schumann); The Fibonacci number 144 in paintings of Rune Mields (Th. Grundhöfer and N. Rosehr); The “golden section” and the fascination of the beautiful (H. Henning); 3D computer graphics: mathematics, arts, reality (A. Filler); Coincidence as a tool: Monte Carlo methods in arts (C. Weiß); Spirals in arts and mathematics (J. Heitzer); The beauty of mathematics (Th. Weth); Abstract vs. concrete music – abstract vs. concrete mathematics (T. Leuders); Concrete queries about concrete pictures (M. Ludwig).
