Cathode layer formation of an independent volume discharge in helium. (Russian) Zbl 1112.78326

Plasmas of high pressure are widely used nowadays as an active medium in gas impulse lasers. There is a list of papers describing experimental investigation results on independent volume discharges (IVD) in different gas mixtures. As a rule a homogeneous state of the IVD is not stable under high temperature and in a period of time after the ignition the charge transfers in a spark channel. In spite of the list of publications on the question the mechanism of the instability development is not clarified until now. In this connection an investigation of the physical mechanism of a cathode layer formation in a homogeneous volume charge plays an important part. The article is dedicated to experimental investigation and numerical modeling of the homogeneous IVD formation dynamics in Helium and an analysis of possible mechanisms of its development in the early stage of the ignition.
