Summary: The spacecraft form is known to affect its aerodynamic and thermal characteristics strongly. This paper formulates and solves new variational problems of finding optimal forms of flat and axisymmetric bodies from the standpoint of the minimum of the total heating along the flight trajectory. These body shapes allow the heat surface fluxes to be reduced by 20–50%.
