Collected papers. Vols. I–III. Edited by K. Chandrasekharan and H. Maaß. (Gesammelte Abhandlungen. Band I–III. Herausgegeben von K. Chandrasekharan und H. Maaß.) (German) Zbl 0143.00101

Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag. vii, 548 S.; iv, 491 S.; iv, 484 S. (1966).
The publication represents a collection in three volumes of all papers of C. L. Siegel up to the year 1964. Volume I contains papers published between 1921 and 1937, including his thesis and the three fundamental papers on the analytic theory of quadratic forms. Volume II contains his publications between the years 1937 and 1944, including his work on Symplectic Geometry, and his paper “Einführung in die Theorie der Modulfunktionen \(n\)-ten Grades”, where he introduced, what are now known as Siegel modular functions. Volume III contains (i) his papers from 1944 onwards, (ii) the monograph “Zur Reduktionstheorie quadratischer Formen” first published by the Mathematical Society of Japan, (iii) a lecture “Zur Geschichte des Frankfurter Mathematischen Seminars”, (iv) a facsimile of a letter written by him to W. Gröbner and (v) a complete list of all titles (with references) appearing in these volumes.
The publication is indeed a great service to the mathematical community, particularly since some of his papers are not available in many libraries. The reviewer would have liked a list of his other publications also included; these publications, bearing the stamp of his genius, in the matter of presentation of the subject matter contain, moreover, some new results and new proofs of some known results. It is hoped that it would be included in a future volume.
