zbMATH — the first resource for mathematics

Beginning statistics with data analysis. (English) Zbl 0567.62001
Addison-Wesley Series in Statistics. Reading, Massachusetts etc.: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company. XX, 585 p. (1983).
The book ranks among the most elementary expositions on mathematical statistics. Without any unnecessary mathematical background it explains in a user-friendly form the elements of the widely used statistical tools:
Frequency distributions, tables and diagrams, measures of location and dispersion, gathering data including sampling theory, elements of probability, introduction to testing, foundations of linear and multilinear regression, analysis of variance, some nonparametric tools and some ideas of experimentation. The authors try to show some examples of computer outputs, so that the reader may get ideas how to treat such listings, but no ways of using computers for solving the tasks are shown.
The text might be useful as a textbook for the elementary reading in mathematical statistics for students mainly in social sciences, economics or medicine. For this purpose, the book is more than convenient and for reading it only elements of algebra are necessary.
