Simple quadrilaterals with high coarse-mesh accuracy. (English) Zbl 0623.73074

Quadrilateral elements for plane stress and strain are formulated so as to achieve high coarse-mesh accuracy, particularly for bending problems and incompressible materials. The Hu-Washizu variational principle is used in conjunction with an orthogonal projection so that the resulting element stiffness requires no matrix inversions. Results are given for several problems, including distorted meshes, and the elements exhibit excellent performance for coarse meshes.
