Given a-priori fixed error, the problem of experimental data approximation using a piecewise polynomial (in some Chebyshev system) with free conjugation nodes is investigated. The properties of the approximation with minimal number of nodes are studied. A computational scheme for such optimal approximation and results of testing two different algorithms are presented.
