On the law of large numbers. (O zakone bol’shikh chisel). Transl. from the Latin by Ya. V. Uspenskij. With an appendix of the jubillee speech by A. A. Markov, of a preface by A. N. Kolmogorov and of comments. Ed. by Yu. V. Prokhorov. (Russian) Zbl 0646.01008
Moskva: Nauka. 176 p. R. 0.90 (1986).
The central (but smaller) part of this text consists of a facsimile edition of the 1913 translation into Russian of the fourth part of Ars conjectandi, containing the celebrated law of large numbers. Being the first rigorously proven statement in probability theory it has enjoyed the honour of being celebrated at a number of various anniversaries. Included in the book are also a preface by A. N. Kolmogorov and the speech delivered by A. A. Markov on the occasion of the two-hundred-years anniversary 1913. Following the text of Ars conjectandi there is a very interesting material with comments, remarks, biographical sketch of the life of Bernoulli etc. placing the life and work of Bernoulli in its proper context.
