Compression of bonded elastic bodies. (English) Zbl 0655.73024
Summary: The compression of elastic bodies bonded between two rigid parallel plates is examined within the context of finite elasticity theory, with special reference to compressible materials. For body geometries for which buckling may be excluded theoretical upper and lower bounds on the total energy stored in the body (and on certain other quantities) are expressed in terms of a single parameter related to the boundary data. Subject to certain restrictions, these results apply in respect of a general compressible isotropic elastic strain-energy function. On specialization to the linear theory some new results are obtained for this case. Numerical results are given to illustrate both the linear and nonlinear theories. Results for the incompressible limit are also obtained and compared with previous work in the literature.
