Factors of coalescent automorphisms. (English) Zbl 0695.28005
The author investigates several properties of invariant sub-sigma- algebras (or equivalently, factors) of an ergodic automorphism. For example, an ergodic automorphism is coalescent if it is not isomorphic to a proper factor. The author shows (among several other things) that coalescence is not preserved under passage to factors. Rudolph’s minimal self-joining example is exploited, and connections with simplicity and with finite rank are considered.
