This volume contains the papers presented at an international symposium held in San Sebastian, Spain, in 1990. The general target of the symposium is the relevance of empirical questions to mathematics — the connection between mathematics and reality, problems of the application of mathematics, relationships between mathematical theories and empirical ones, and above all the possibility of reconstructing mathematics in the fashion of the empirical sciences, as the latter are seen by recent “structuralist” philosophers of science. Other rubrics opened to discussion include the history, psychology and sociology of mathematics.
There are seventy four papers, all short (less than ten pages), in English, Spanish and French, reproduced photographically from authors’ typescripts.
