During the eighties and afterwards, a wide literature of common fixed point theorems was established under the concept of weakly commuting mappings due to the reviewer. It is shown, modifying suitably the proofs, that the above literature is valid under the more general concept of compatible maps due to the first author [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 9, 771- 779 (1986; Zbl 0613.54029)]. This pellucid paper contains a good source of 33 references. Additional literature can be found in the interesting paper of the second author with S. Park and K. B. Moon [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 146, 482-494 (1990; Zbl 0711.54028)].
