The authors introduce the concept of compatible mappings of type (A) which are equivalent to the concept of compatible mapping under some conditions and prove a common fixed point theorem for compatible mappings of type (A) on a complete metric space. The main theorem presented in this paper extends the results of H. K. Pathak [Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 17, 201-211 (1986; Zbl 0581.54033)] and D. Prasad [ibid. 16, 1073-1077 (1985; Zbl 0575.54036)].
