The concept of using independent variational discretization on subdomains, which are coupled together, is extended by a new technique called the mortar element method. This method being designed to be optimal as well from the theoretical point of view as for its implementations. The last problem was presented also by C. Mavriplis [Nonconforming discretization and a posteriori error estimators for adaptive spectral element techniques, Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1989)].
