## The $$p$$ and $$h-p$$ versions of the finite element method, basic principles and properties.(English)Zbl 0813.65118

A survey of recent papers on the basic properties of $$p$$ and $$h-p$$ versions, approximation theorems and the rate of convergence. The areas where the behaviour of the $$p$$ and $$h-p$$ versions are significantly different from that of the classical $$h$$ version are studied. Numerical examples are given.
