This is a standard textbook on statistical inference based on the likelihood. Contents: 1) Introduction and overview (15 pages), 2) Likelihood (34 p.), 3) Maximum likelihood estimation (53 p.), 4) Hypothesis testing (58 p.), 5) Linear models (59 p.), 6) Generalized linear models (41 p.). An Appendix recalls standard concepts of probability theory and some mathematical tools. Every chapter contains exercises, answers to selected exercises are given. The exposition is elementary.
