Siegmund-Schultze, Reinhard The University of Berlin from reopening until 1953. (English) Zbl 0902.01033 Begehr, H. G. W. (ed.) et al., Mathematics in Berlin. Basel: Birkhäuser. 137-141 (1998). When the University of Berlin was reopend on January 29, 1946, not one of its renowned mathematicians of former time was still in his office. In this paper it is described how it took eight years before the Institute of Mathematics was renewed and resettled in the restored main building of the University of East Berlin. H. Hasse, H. Grell, H. Reichardt, K. Schröter, H. L. Schmid, E. Schmidt, H. Behnke, R. Kochendörffer joined the staff. The political situation in Berlin is pointed out. Especially it is described how the political positions of mathematicians and the GDR-government were partly in agreement, partly in conflict. Relations between mathematicians from East- and West-Berlin are discussed. The paper refers to unpublished sources and personal reports. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0997.00008].
