The authors define the concept of compatible mappings of type (C), refining the related concepts of type (A) and (B) in normed spaces [cf. G. Jungck, P. P. Murthy and the second author, Math. Jap. 38, No. 2, 381-390 (1993; Zbl 0791.54059)]. They establish common fixed point theorems of Greguš type extending several known results, among others, that one of B. Fisher and the reviewer [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 9, 23-28 (1986; Zbl 0597.47036)].
