Plane deformations of elastic solids with intrinsic boundary elasticity. (English) Zbl 0938.74014

Subject of this clearly written paper is the plane deformation of a cylindrical or prismatic body covered with a thin coating. The authors generalize previous work reported in the literature by taking into account flexural stiffness of the outer layer and by considering finite elastic deformations. Using the stationary energy principle, they obtain equations of equilibrium as well as boundary conditions for substrate and layer. Then, with the help of an incremental theory, they study stability of equilibrium and bifurcation. Finally, the theory is applied to a coated half-plane. For compressible neo-Hookean bulk-material, critical stretches are calculated numerically, and a careful interpretation of the results is given.
