The volume collects the lectures given at a conference held in Ferrara on December 1995, on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the death of Torquato Tasso, a famous Italian poet, who was also a teacher of mathematics at Ferrara University. Among the five sessions of the conference, the second one was devoted to “Tasso, the mathematical sciences and the University”. Here the following lectures were presented: L. Pepe, Tasso and the chair of mathematics at Ferrara University; E. Giusti, Geometry and natural philosophy in Giambattista Benedetti; P. D. Napolitani, The editions of the classical authors: Maurolico and Commandino; A. Fiocca, Science and technique in Ferrara at the age of Tasso: Giambattista Aleotti; P. Freguglia, Logic and mathematics in the late fifteenth century; A. Pagani, The sentiment of the reason. The Euclidean applications to Tasso’s poetry.
