Mortality among the elderly in Sweden 1988-1997. (English) Zbl 0973.62106

The author estimates the sex-specific mortality intensities by the official publications of Statistics Sweden 1988-1997. The mortality rates are fitted by a modified Makeham function \[ g(x)=a+be^{cx}\quad \text{if}\quad x<w, \] and \[ g(x)=a+be^{cx}+k(x-w)\quad \text{if}\quad x>w, \] where the parameters \(a,b,c,k,w\) are selected by minimization of the modified chi-square. The threshold \(w\) is used to describe specific mortal rates of elderly persons which are fitted inaccurately by the pure Makeham model.
