Providing an introduction to non-smooth thermodynamics and its application to a number of practical problems in mechanics, civil and mechanical engineering, this book appeals to both students (at a graduate level) and researchers.
In the introductory chapters 1-5, fundamental concepts of non-smooth thermodynamics are derived, and the necessary background material needed to deal with mechanics involving non-smooth constraints and/or discontinuities are given.
Chapters 6-14 deal with applications ranging from collisions of deformable solids, shape memory alloys, soil freezing and solid-liquid phase changes to fibre-reinforced materials.
The reader is assumed to have a certain mathematical background; an appendix, however, summarizes concepts which might not belong to a ‘standard’ background. The text is illustrated with many figures and tables. 256 references provide links to further reading.
