A new SPECT reconstruction algorithm based on the Novikov explicit inversion formula. (English) Zbl 0995.65142
Author’s abstract: We present a new reconstruction algorithm for single-photon emission computed tomography. The algorithm is based on the explicit inversion formula for the attenuated Radon transform with non-uniform attenuation proposed by R. G. Novikov [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 332, No. 12, 1059-1063 (2001; Zbl 0984.44001)]. Our reconstruction technique can be viewed as a generalization of both the filtered backprojection algorithm and the algorithm of O. Tretiak and C. Metz [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 39, 341-354 (1980; Zbl 0459.44003)]. We test the performance of the present algorithm in a variety of numerical experiments. Our numerical examples show that the algorithm is capable of accurate image reconstruction even in the case of strongly non-uniform attenuation coefficient, similar to that occurring in a human thorax.
