Oxford Statistical Science Series 27. Oxford: Oxford University Press (ISBN 0-19-851055-1/hbk). xxii, 509 p. (2003).
The book covers 15 topics of highly structured stochastic systems (HSSS), a modern strategy of building statistical models for challenging real-world problems, and is a final activity of the Network and Programme in HSSS funded by the European Science Foundation from 1993 to 2001. The aim of this book is to make recent developments in HSSS accessible to a general statistical audience.
The text is divided into an Introduction and 15 chapters, each consisting of a main article by a leading author and two contributions of invited discussants. The following topics are represented: graphical methods and causal inference (4 articles), Markov chain Monte Carlo methods (3 articles), spatial modelling (3 articles), modelling of biological systems (3 articles), HSSS model criticism and nonparametric Bayesian statistics.
