Mat. Apl. Comput. 7, No. 2, 347-359 (2006). Summary: We present a computational model for flexible structures of arbitrary geometry in three-dimensional space where the kinematics is governed by the theory of rods with flexion, shear, torsion and membrane effects. A mixed Petrov-Galerkin method is used to construct a stable finite-element approximation. Error estimates indicating rates of convergence, as well as numerical results confirming those rates, are presented.
