The R software. Mastering the language. Effecting statistical analyses. (Le logiciel R. Maîtriser le langage. Effectuer des analyses statistiques.) (French) Zbl 1216.68006

Collection Statistique et Probabilités Appliquées. Paris: Springer (ISBN 978-2-8178-0114-8/pbk). xxxvii, 488 p. (2011).
This book is devoted to R – a programming language and open source software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a multiplatform textbook for Unix/Linux, Windows and Macintosh users.
The book consists of two parts. In the first part, a nearly complete description of R is given. In the consecutive chapters, the following topics are described: main data types and the methods of their importing and exporting to and from the environment, data manipulation functions, the way how to obtain any help and a documentation of R, the methods of making and formatting plots, programming in R, and, finally, work optimisation. The second part of the book is devoted to the application of R in statistics. In more detail, the following topics are deeply addressed: matrix calculation, integration, optimisation, descriptive statistics, random variables, distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear regression, and variance analysis.
The book is presented in an accessible fashion, with many practical remarks, examples and excercises. It can be useful for all those who just want to start the adventure with R, and for all R users who want to improve their skills. The book addresses a wide spectrum of people – students, teachers, researchers and all who use statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, biology, etc. in their everyday work.
