A nonperturbative solution of \(D=1\) string theory. (English) Zbl 1332.81175
Summary: We derive a nonperturbative solution of \(D=1\) string theory, based on a double scaling limit of the one-dimensional random matrix model. We derive an exact expression for the partition function in terms of the string coupling constant. The weak coupling expansion suffers from infrared divergences, which we attribute to massless tadpoles. The continuum limit seems to be well defined, however, in a strong coupling expansion. This could correspond to a different stable nonperturbative vacuum.
